Why Am I Not Surprised?

Why is everyone shocked about President Obama's address to schoolchildren?  I guess I'm just missing the point.  No one vehemently defends my right to watch Criminal Minds or NCIS, uninterrupted when the President makes a primetime address to the nation.  Where were the libertarians in 1991 when then-President George H.W.

No Patient Left Behind*

*The title of this post refers to the legislation supporting socialized medicine, known as HR 3200 in the House.  No Patient Left Behind is subject to change without notice and may not cover people who have lived too long (anyone over 70,) infants up to two years old, anyone requiring expensive surgery, cancer patients, anyone seeking alternative forms of medicine, anyone with genetic markers for certain diseases, meat eaters (risk of Mad Cow,) vegans, homosexuals, and anyone needing any care which may require their health professionals to change their practices or actually be innovati

Things Fall Apart

The title for this post is actually the title of a book by Chinua Achebe, but it is also a great theory, that everything eventually falls apart.  Last night I had this wonderful --err-- awful epiphany that struck me and everything just fell into place.  I saw the country heading down this road of progressivism which will ultimately lead us to a backward, cro-Magnon society (pick your dystopia here: Ayn Rand's Anthem, Orwell's Oceania, etc.).  We will eventually do everything for the good of everyone else.  Perhaps we should just eliminate the pronoun 'I' from ou

Orwell was Right!

1984 has arrived a little late.  Our tour guide George Orwell is long dead and in the ground.  And Big Brother government is flourishing!  The only difference between Orwell's classic prophecy and today is that there is not a single Big Brother, but numerous Big Brothers trickling down from federal powers to local government.

'Paint All Our Roofs White?'

The Professor, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, thinks Americans should be painting their roofs and roads white in order to reflect the sun's rays and reduce global warming.  This project, according to liberal academic should take place primarily in urban areas and could curb global warming for up to eleven years!  Eleven years! Oh my!  Sounds like another stall from the green liberals while they try to invest in more "green" projects to discover the great new alternative energy that will save us all.

The Media and Obama: Oh the Pain!

I am not a good American because I like to think for myself. The big media companies despise people like me because I don't fall for their catch-phrases and my emotions are anything but transient. I am never compelled by anything the blondes on FOXNEWS or CNN are clamoring about, especially when all they can talk about is the economy and gossip: Michelle hugged The Queen; Carla didn't kiss Barack; Senate passes stimulus bill. What happened to the war?

Short and Sweet

I cherish the notion of individual rights as well as states' rights.  That is why I was truly concerned when there was only one response to my blog on the issue of gay marriage.  It is true that there are bigger issues, but gay marriage is currently at the helm in Maine.  Possibly as soon as this week there will be a vote to allow gay marriage in Maine.  The legislative system is how we execute laws.  Everything I have to say about gay marriage (i.e.

In Individuals We Trust?

I just returned from a movie five minutes ago.  The theme of the film and the question and answer session that followed was focused on the economic crisis.  Specifically, how Americans have gotten themselves into debt.  The movie concluded that predatory lending and "evil" credit card companies are to blame!  Comments from the audience reflected the mood of indoctrination.  One audience member lamented credit card companies who hike their rates if your payment is late or you miss it entirely.  I'm not kidding!

Can we talk about something important now?

Who cares about gay marriage?  Is gay marriage really a pressing issue?  No!  Of course, most people know we have more important issues in this country.  Unfortunately, gay marriage is not going away as an issue.  Thus, I propose a solution.  First, however, I would like to preface my text by saying that I believe my idea is more of a philosophy, not a political idea.  If we are to consider gay marriage a political issue, we debase politics and the institutions of government which should not even deal with a subject I consider to be relative only to the in

Dear Cartoonists

Dear Cartoonists,

I would like to begin by apologizing for President Obama.  I know that all of you expected this eloquent and intelligent man to be a new source, of wittier humor.  Let's face it, making fun of President Bush was too easy!  Unfortunately, you, the cartoonists, cannot make fun of Barack Obama.  Why?  Well, is it not obvious?  He is black.  And for those of you who missed the memo, making fun of someone who is black is not politically correct anymore.

A New Paradigm: The Earth + Plastic!

The Republican Project is poised to begin an effort to uproot the liberal leadership which has governed this state for too long. Although the effort is largely concentrated in southern Maine, the first Democrat to get voted off the island should be Senator John Nutting (D-Leeds).

Charlie Webster- Take Notice!

I attended the Cumberland County Republican Committee meeting on Tuesday, February 17th. I was most certainly the youngest person present.

In Defense of Capitalism

I am middle class and therefore, inherently inclined to believe Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein (The Shock Doctrine,) and even George Carlin when they characterize capitalism, particularly in America as a consortium of evil, white men who own everything including the government. I want some of this wealth! Why do corporate leaders receive such high compensation and own so many vehicles and houses? They need to share their money because this country has problems (healthcare, Social Security, education, debt, etc.). I could use that money to pay for college and have fewer loans.

Conservatism

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg once remarked in a 60 Minutes interview that she believed “in Order to form a more perfect Union” was the most essential statement in the Constitution. Her statement highlights the inherent difference between liberals and conservatives, that is, ‘our government should adapt to modernity and contemporary ideologies’ versus ‘our government was created in a perfect vision and should not change’. Unfortunately, the latter statement is both the cornerstone of the conservative temple and the obstacle which hinders the progress of the Republican Party.

Economy We Can Believe In?

The economy has become the concern for Americans. How can anyone ignore the financial crisis? It has become the dismal introduction to every news broadcast. Similar to the media, I do not have a crystal ball, so my view into the future is a blur, especially when it comes to President-elect Obama’s economic strategies. However, if Obama’s economic team is any sign of the policies he will pursue, then Americans, unfortunately, are in for more downturn.
